When we first teamed up and discussed how we envisioned the early years of Tailgate Fantasy Sports, we decided to follow the methodologies of Eric Ries, the author of The Lean Startup.
That theory is centered around creating a minimum viable product (MVP), then iterating quickly based on feedback loops directly tied to the needs of potential customers and early adopters.
A minimum viable product is basically a bare-bones, no-frills yet functional, version of the ultimate product. A proof of concept.
It is the pre-season for both the alpha and beta builds if you will.
The Lean Startup approach helps in two main ways:
1. You don't have to invest a ton of money into something you're not entirely sure the market is asking for. Thus, you can build an MVP product for a fraction of the cost of a feature-rich app.
and
2. It allows you to save time by validating if the idea itself has legs. You quickly decide to keep or kill the project, then prioritize your development efforts based on initial feedback.
In our minds, the MVP was to be a web app that consisted of a few key things. The non-negotiables were:
- Creating team-based fantasy football
- Syncing NFL player stats
- Applying the Tailgate game rules and scoring
- Allowing users to set and maintain a weekly lineup
- Creating a leaderboard so we could crown a champion
*We also support preseason and postseason play which is cool compared to most other fantasy football games 😎
Next was adding league mode and playoffs, and we made ours to be a notch above by creating public leagues, and supporting leagues of any and all sizes!
The final piece of the MVP pie that we wanted to drop was player power ups! Talk about a game-changer! Power ups are awesome and added a much-needed strategic layer of complexity to the game 💪
All of that was added to the web-app version of the game, the MVP, which is now offline.
Once we validated the MVP and had a significant number of interested players each week setting their lineups, we decided to move to the next phase, the alpha release.
The alpha release has been going well too! We have been internally testing the alpha release for the past few months, which is why the game has been offline this NFL season. The alpha release is basically a closed beta test, meant to squash any bugs and pre-emptively solve problems before they rear their ugly heads 🥾🐛
All of that being said, the beta-version of the app is now available for both iOS and Android and is ready for public consumption!
We need a community of beta testers to pound on the app for the rest of the NFL season and into the postseason to make sure things are working as-intended.
Of course, we will continue to work to add new features and more sports so the game is playable year-round! Your fandom doesn't stop with the NFL and neither will we!
Stay tuned for more updates and please send us all feedback related to the mobile apps.
As always, we appreciate you!
